In Mexico, the boundary between the world of the living and that of spirits is thin. Aztec traditions blend with Catholic beliefs, creating a unique mystical universe where every animal, every gesture, every object has deep meaning.

Here, an owl singing at night is not just a bird: it's a witch seeking prey. A raw egg is not just food: it's a healing tool against the evil eye. Welcome to the fascinating world of Mexican superstitions. 💀

La Lechuza: When the Owl Becomes a Witch

In Mexico, the saying is famous: "Cuando el tecolote canta, el indio muere" (When the owl sings, the Indian dies). If you hear an owl or a barn owl singing at night, it's not a bird: it's a bruja (witch) who has taken the form of a bird to seek prey.

The Lechuza (barn owl) is one of the most feared creatures in Mexican folklore. According to legend, witches can transform into night birds to fly and attack their enemies. Their song is an omen of death or imminent misfortune.

If you hear a Lechuza, you must immediately swear or pray to chase it away. Some say you also need to turn your pockets or socks inside out to confuse it. Never look it directly in the eyes, as this can drive you mad.

💡 Did You Know?

In some regions of Mexico, it's believed that Lechuzas are women who have sold their souls to the devil. They can take the form of a bird to take revenge or steal children's souls. That's why children are told never to go out at night without protection.

La Limpia con Huevo: The Egg That Heals

If you have a headache, persistent bad luck, or think you're a victim of "Mal de Ojo" (Evil Eye), there's a traditional Mexican remedy: Limpia con Huevo (egg cleansing).

The method: Take a fresh raw egg and rub it all over your body, from head to toe, making circular motions. Then, break the egg into a glass of transparent water and let it rest all night.

The next morning, observe the egg in the water. If the egg has cooked or forms spikes, filaments, or bubbles, it means it has absorbed the bad energies that were affecting you. The egg has literally "captured" the evil eye or negative energies.

After the limpia, you must throw the egg in the toilet or in a place where no one will step on it. Never eat it or give it to an animal, as it contains the bad energies.

💡 Other Uses of the Egg

The egg is also used to protect houses: place a raw egg in a glass of water in each corner of the house to absorb bad energies. If the egg spoils quickly, it's a sign that there's a lot of negative energy in the house.

Don't Sweep Feet: Guaranteed Celibacy

Like in Spain, sweeping someone's feet in Mexico is considered a bad omen. But here, the superstition goes further: if someone sweeps your feet, you will never get married, or you'll marry a widow or widower.

This belief is particularly strong among young single women. If someone accidentally sweeps your feet, you must immediately spit on the broom or make a protective gesture to cancel the spell.

Some also say you need to step on the broom immediately after to reverse the spell. Others recommend making the sign of the cross or praying to cancel the effect.

Other Mexican Superstitions

Mexico is full of other fascinating superstitions:

  • Never walk under a ladder: as elsewhere, but in Mexico, it's believed to bring bad luck for 7 years.
  • Black cats: crossing a black cat brings bad luck, especially if it crosses your path from left to right.
  • Friday the 13th: called "Martes 13" (Tuesday 13) in some Hispanic countries, but in Mexico, it's mainly Friday that is feared.
  • Never place a hat on the bed: this attracts death or illness into the house.

🎯 In Summary

In Mexico, superstitions are deeply rooted in culture, blending pre-Columbian traditions and modern beliefs. La Lechuza embodies the fear of witches, the egg heals the evil eye, and every gesture has meaning. Here, the visible and invisible worlds coexist daily.

👉 Keep an egg within reach, avoid owls at night, and never let anyone sweep your feet! For the rest, let chance and the stars do their work.
