Five dice. Thirteen combinations. One winner.

With over 100 million sets sold in 65 countries, Yahtzee — known as Yam's in France — is far more than a game of pure luck. Suitable for ages 8 and up, it can be played with family or friends in 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of players.

Its secret? A perfect balance between raw luck (the dice never lie) and strategy (which box to fill, when to take risks, when to play it safe). This guide covers everything: official rules, all 13 combinations, the history of the game, and tips to improve your game.

🎲 Official Yahtzee Rules

Equipment

  • 5 dice — standard 6-sided dice
  • A dice cup (optional but traditional)
  • A score sheet per player (13 boxes to fill)
  • 2 to 8 players (ideal: 2 to 4)

How a Turn Works

  1. 1st roll: the player rolls all 5 dice at once.
  2. Set aside: they choose which dice to keep (0 to 5) and re-roll the rest.
  3. 2nd roll: the player re-rolls the unkept dice.
  4. Set aside: they can change their selection of kept dice again.
  5. 3rd roll (optional): one final roll of the unkept dice — or the player can stop earlier if satisfied.
  6. Record score: after a maximum of 3 rolls, the player selects a box on the score sheet and fills it in.

⚠️ Key Rule

Every box must be filled, even if the score is 0. If no combination matches your roll, you must sacrifice a box by writing 0 in it.

🏛️ History of Yahtzee: From Canada to the World

The story of Yahtzee begins in the 1940s, on the water. A Canadian couple, Léo and Josephine Shubert, enjoyed playing a homemade dice game on their yacht, which they nicknamed "The Yacht Game". The rules were strikingly close to what we know today.

In 1954, they shared their game with Edwin Lowe, the American entrepreneur already famous for popularizing modern Bingo. Lowe was immediately captivated. He acquired the rights to the game… in exchange for 1,000 copies to give to their friends — the Shuberts didn't want money.

In 1956, Milton Bradley bought the game from Lowe and launched it commercially under the name Yahtzee. The game was an instant success in the United States and spread rapidly worldwide.

In France, the game arrived in the 1960s and 70s under the name Yam's, a French phonetic adaptation of "Yahtzee." The rules remain identical. Today it is one of the staples of French family game nights.

Today it is one of the best-selling dice games in history with over 100 million sets sold in 65 countries.

🌍 Yahtzee Variants

Maxi Yahtzee

Uses 6 dice instead of 5, with additional combinations. Yahtzee becomes 6 identical dice. More strategy, more tension with every roll.

Double Yahtzee

Each player has 2 score sheets and can choose which box to fill each turn. Strategy is dramatically increased.

Super Yahtzee

Extra bonus boxes and more complex scoring for players looking for a greater challenge and longer sessions.

Yahtzee! Bonus (Hasbro Edition)

In the modern Hasbro version, scoring a second Yahtzee after the first earns an additional 100-point bonus.

🧠 3 Basic Strategies to Improve Your Game

1. Prioritize the Upper Section Bonus

The +35 pt bonus is earned if the sum of the Ones through Sixes boxes exceeds 63 points. On average, you need to score 3 of each face. This bonus often decides the outcome of the game — don't overlook it!

2. Only Sacrifice the Yahtzee Box as a Last Resort

The Yahtzee box is worth 50 fixed points — one of the most valuable on the sheet. Only write 0 there at the very end of the game when you truly have no other option.

3. Use Chance as Your Safety Net

The Chance box (sum of all dice, no requirement) is your safety valve. Save it for a turn where you get a decent result but nothing else on the sheet fits.
