🔮 Symbolic Approach
Christian exorcisms, voodoo rites, Hindu expulsion mantras: separating a force from a body. It's not proof you're possessed. It's the theater of a part speaking too loudly (anger, addiction, parental voice). Holy water, salt, the name: tools to redraw the boundary.
🛋️ Psychoanalysis (Freud & Jung)
Freud would see hysteria; more usefully: you want an expert to banish what you won't own. Being the exorcist: you pray over others so you don't have to look at yourself. The laughing demon: the shadow doesn't obey cheap magic.
🧠 Neuroscience
Ritual, Latin, screen-watched convulsions. A genuine inner conflict, a tic, a panic attack. The brain loves 'out-of-body' scripts to encode an affect that's too intense. Sleep paralysis sometimes tells its story as possession.
💡 Practical Advice
Name the force (alcohol, rumination, someone) and take a secular step: limit, appointment, word. If it overflows (voices, terror, broken sleep), see a healthcare professional, not an improvised rite. Expulsion happens in therapy too.
